Award of the ERTMS system in the Madrid commuter network

On October 2006 the Dimetronic/Alcatel Joint Venture has been awarded by the Ministry of Infrastructure with the contract for the Signalling works of the new commuter tunnel linking Atocha and Chamartín stations in Madrid. The contract includes the extension of the ERTMS/ETCS system to the commuter lines of Madrid to be delivered within the next 42 months for a total of 69 million euros.

The works include the installation of Levels 1 and 2 of ERTMS and ASFA between the South exit of Chamartín and the North entrance to Atocha from and to the new tunnel. All other commuter lines entering the tunnel will be equipped with Level 1 ERTMS to allow interoperability in the exploitation. Such lines include

  • Parla-Atocha (Line C4).
  • Aranjuez-Atocha and San Martín de la Vega (Lines C3 and C3a).
  • Chamartín-Colmenar Viejo and Alcobendas (Lines C7 and C1).
  • Chamartín–Villalba (Line C8)

Dimetronic’s scope of work includes FUTUR 1300 equipment for Level 1 ERTMS on lines C1, C7 and C8; RBC FUTUR 2500 equipment for Level 2 ERTMS in Chamartín station; a Central Control Post for ERTMS and a Central Maintenance Post at Chamartín, using FUTUR systems. Dimetronic’s FUTUR systems provide useful operational tools to manage real-time Temporary Speed Restrictions in a simple, centralized way from the control centre.
