On October 2004 the Signalling system for the containers junction of the Sines port, was commissioned in due time and conditions. To that effect, a total of 7 wayside signals, 6 track circuits and 2 point machines were installed under the control of the SSI interlockings at Ermidas-Sado station, which were accordingly modified. The junction may also be commanded through local controls on location at the port itself or through the CTC located at Setúbal, which was also updated for that purpose.
The port of Sines, in Southern Portugal, has been enhanced with the aim to deliver the biggest sea port in Southern Europe. The system above allows great improvement in the traffic conditions, which include 92 weekly trains carrying 53.000 tones of freight between Sines and the Pego power plant. Following this successful first approach to the Administration of the Port of Sines, further enhancements to the big railway terminal at the port are already under study.
